The matter-of-fact way with which Ivar told her she would die if she did not obey made her feel sick. Lucrezia did not want to die...and yet she would be useless to her family without her virtue. No one would come right out and say that, of course (except perhaps Juan), but she would see it in their eyes. Not all of them, she thought fiercely. Cesare would not think less of me. Nothing could ever change that. The thought of him gave her a bit more courage.
"I suppose compared to raiding and killing, my people would appear boring," she conceded, fighting to keep bitterness and disgust from her tone. Again, a balance had to be struck. Lucrezia wanted to catch his interest without offending him...or exciting him too much.
"Though I do not remember my lessons on your people too well...is it true, that you believe in more gods than the One True God?" There was a sincere spark of curiosity amidst the fear in her eyes. "I cannot imagine worshipping so many...do you have a favorite, or is that not allowed?"
